Kalamkari is a type of hand-printed or hand block printed Mussar, Head Scraf, Shwals. Kalamkari refers to the ancient style of hand painting that is done with a tamarind pen, using natural dyes. The literal meaning of Kalamkari is kalam, which is derived from a Persian word. Under medieval Islamic rule, the term Kalamkari Persian,قلمکار which is derived from the words kalam (pen) and Kari (craftmanship), meaning drawing with a pen came to be in popular use under the patronage of Golconda sultanate.
This involves bleaching Kalamkari fabric, softening it, drying it in sun, preparing natural dyes, air drying and washing. After this, the fabric is ready for printing. Kalamkari designs are then painted on the fabric, by hand. Kalamkari fabrics include minute details and it is painted using natural dye. The kalamkari artists make use special pens which are particularly crafted for this purpose from the bamboo tree. Paintings created with the help of a free-flowing pen, Srikalahasti Kalamkari is a distinctive art in India. This art is a twelve-step process done on cotton or silk fabric using natural dyes
Test for original kalamkari is the smell of the fabric. You can smell the odours of milk and alum. And the natural colours used doesn't have glitter.
